Most people don’t know to look for the best commercial weed eater. But, these amazing products can make your life much easier. They are large, powerful machines that trim grass very well. To truly find the top commercial weed eater you need to know more about them.
First, let’s discuss the weed eater. Weed eaters are also called string trimmers. They weren’t first manufactured until the 1970s. They use a heavy-duty string to cut grass. They do not have the typical metal blade found on lawn mowers.
The heavy-duty string helps you run weed eaters along a house’s foundation or other tight location. They are ideal for removing weeds along a border. This duty explains their other common nickname, the weed wacker.
Now you know what a weed eater is. It is time to discuss how commercial models are different than household models. In the rest of this article, we also explain how to find a great commercial string trimmer. We even provide ten of the top products on the market in 2020.

How is a commercial weed eater different?
In many respects, a commercial string trimmer is the same as any other weed eater. The design is the same. There is a cutting head connected to a shaft. At the top of the shaft is a motor and handle. A weed eater looks a lot like a stick vacuum. The two machines just perform very different functions.
Commercial weed eaters are usually larger than traditional household ones. That larger size enables them to make more power. Power is important because it determines how quickly you can finish weed wacking. Power also determines what the weed wacker can cut.
In combination with their larger size and power, commercial string trimmers typically use gas. Commercial electric weed eaters are very hard to find. We discuss the reason for this fuel choice in the FAQ section below.
The final feature that sets a commercial string trimmer apart is its single purpose. Often homeowner weed eaters perform multiple functions. You will not find this multifunctionality with commercial gas string trimmers. If they do anything else, it is usually just one other thing. Such a focused purpose means that the commercial string trimmer is more efficient than household models.

Features to look for when buying a commercial weed eater
Want to find a great commercial weed eat? Then you need to keep the following features in mind.
Size and Weight
Size and weight are two very important considerations when it comes to commercial weed eaters. As we mentioned in the last section, commercial models are larger and heavier than normal. But, they should still be light enough for you to carry for long periods.
Weed eater can become dangerous. If you drop it or bring it too close to the body, it could hurt you. That is why you need a commercial string trimmer that is comfortable for you to carry for long periods.
Weight refers to the weight of the entire machine. Size mostly refers to the cutting head. The larger the cutting head, the faster your weeds will get trimmed. Bigger isn’t always better, though. The largest cutting heads work great for big yards. If you have a lot of tight corners, however, you will want a smaller head. Most commercial gas string trimmers will be between 10-20 inches.
There are two main shaft types on a weed eater: straight or curved. These two types should be pretty self-evident. A straight shaft is straight. A curved shaft has a curve near the cutting head. Both types of shafts come with their pros and cons.
Straight shafts are the most flexible. They are also very precise. This is why you will see straight shafts more often on commercial models. Straight shaft weed eaters tend to be heavier. They can also be hard to maneuver for those unfamiliar with this machine.
Curved shafts are great for beginners. They are typically lighter. They also have a more ergonomic design. This makes them much easier for most people to use. Commercial string trimmers do not often use a curved shaft. The curve makes it impossible to weed eat under bushes. You will also not be as precise with this type of shaft.
Power is going to be a big consideration. Commercial weed eaters, in general, tend to make more power than other models. Some products will still be more powerful than others, though.
The more powerful the weed wacker, the more efficiently it will remove weeds from your yard. Power can be found in a couple of numbers. The cc (or cubic centimeters) and HP (horsepower) numbers are the most important when it comes to power.
Cc measures the displacement in the engine. Completely understand displacement can be tricky. For this article, all you need to know is that a larger cc means more power.
HP, on the other hand, is fairly familiar. You will have come across horsepower when looking at cars. This number tells you how powerful an engine is. Again, the larger the HP number, the more powerful the weed eater.
There are two main types of fuel for weed eaters: gas and electric. Commercial electric weed eaters can come with power cords or use battery power. These products are very hard to come by in commercial models. You will not often see a commercial battery weed eater.
The reason for the lack of electric commercial models is that they produce less power. Commercial gas string trimmers will also make more power than an electric. Products that use gas are much more common.
Some gas weed eaters require you to mix the gas with oil. Your user’s manual will provide the proper proportions of gas to oil. 4-cycle engines, we discuss these below, do not require a mix of gas and oil. Oil is still added to the machine. It just doesn’t have to be mixed with the gas. That saves you a lot of trouble. There is no real power difference between a gas/oil and just gas commercial string trimmer.
As with fuel and shaft types, there are two options for commercial weed eater engines. The first is a 2-cycle (stroke) engine. 2-cycle engines complete their power cycle in two strokes of the piston.
The second engine type has already been mentioned. It is the 4-cycle engine. 4-cycle engines complete the power cycle in four strokes of the piston. As with our other dual options, 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines come with their pros and cons.
2-cycle engines generate more power. Power is one of the most important factors of a commercial string trimmer. The problem with 2-cycle engines is that they are loud. They also require you to mix gas with oil. That can be a hassle for some homeowners.
4-cycle engines, on the other hand, are much easier to use. They make less power, but they only require gas. 4-cycle engines are also quieter and more durable than 2-cycle engines.
We mentioned cutting the head size above. There is, however, another factor that you should consider in the cutting head. This factor is how the cutting head releases the string. Commercial weed eaters use the string to trim the grass. As you use the weed eater, the string wears down. Sometimes you will need a new string during a single trimming session.
Some commercial string trimmers still require you to change the string manually. These are called fixed head string trimmers. This procedure is not usually hard. Still, some models now make it easier for you to get the new string in the cutting head fast.
Another type of cutting head is the bump feed. These are very easy to use. An entire spool of string is put in the cutting head. As you need more string, you just bump the head on the ground. You can do this even while the engine is running.
The last type of cutting head is the automatic feed. These are the most expensive models. The motor in the cutting head makes sure that the string remains a constant length. Because of the second motor, automatic feed weed eaters can be heavy. They also may not work correctly. Many professionals prefer a bump feed cutting head.
Your final consideration when purchasing a commercial weed eater will be the cost. The cost of these products is not usually as much as some other yard maintenance tools. You will not, for example, need to spend as much as you would on a riding lawn mower.
You will still find a large range in the cost of the commercial gas string trimmer, though. They could range from $50 to a couple of hundred dollars. Typically, the more power and features a product have, the more expensive it will be.
Make sure to know your budget before you look for a commercial week eater. You don’t want to love a product you can’t afford easily. Knowing your budget will also help cut down your list of choices. This can keep the buying process from being too overwhelming.

Echo is such a great brand that we had to include one more of their products on our top ten list. The GT-225 String Trimmer is a curved weed eater. It has a cutting path of 16-inches. This is slightly smaller than the Husqvarna’s at the top of our list. 16-inches will still trim any yard very well.

As with all 2-cycle engines, you will need to use a combination of oil and gas. Husqvarna makes refilling the tank very easy, though. The translucent fuel tank also appears in this model. You will love the X-Torq engine, which reduces emissions from the weed eater by 60%. Fuel efficiency is also increased by 20%.

It has an ergonomic left-hand grip. You can adjust the grip up and down the shaft. That makes the Pas-225 very comfortable to use.
What makes the Pas-225 unique is its ability to fit many attachments. It will fit all 12 PAS attachments from Echo. These include string trimmers, hedgers, pruners, saw chippers, and much more. You can essentially use the Pas-225 for any yard work. You just need the right attachment.
We did say that super multi-purpose machines were less useful as commercial string trimmers. But the Pas-225 is an exception. It has an easy to use and durable attachment point. The attachments all fit well and will not fall off while in use.

Tips and Tricks for using a commercial weed trimmer
Weed wacking can be a precision occupation. Anyone can do it. But to do it well takes practice. You need the following tips and tricks to trim your weeds just right.
- Make sure you have on all of your safety equipment. This includes gloves, goggles, and even leg and feet protection.
- Check the weed eater for any issues before you turn it on. If you have a fixed head check the amount of string. You will need to replace the string if there is not enough left to properly trim your yard.
- Do not use your commercial weed eater over rocks or cement. This is a great way to destroy the string. Before you begin, pick up any rocks or hard objects in your way. If you are edging, go slowly.
- You can use your commercial string trimmer to clean up cracks in a sidewalk. You will need to tilt the machine so that the tip of the string barely brushes the concrete. Bring the string down a little bit to remove all of the grass from the crack. This is an advanced technique. Take your time and be patient. You will learn the exact right angle you need for your pavement.
- If you tilt the commercial gas string trimmer until it is vertical, it will create a perfect edge. Again this takes a little practice. You will want to learn this skill. It is a great way to create a clean, straight edge.
Tips and Tricks for cleaning your weed eater.
Your weed eater is going to get dirty. Keeping it clean is a big part of its maintenance. The better you maintain the commercial weed eater, the longer it will last. Follow these tips for keeping your weed eater clean and maintained.
- Always clean your weed wacker after every use. You do not want grass and weeds to build up in the machine. It will make commercial weed eater less efficient.
- Cleaning your commercial string trimmer will be easier if you remove the grass when it is wet. Dried on grass and weed are much harder to remove.
- Never clean or perform any maintenance while the machine is running. Make sure the weed eater is turned off and the spark plug disengaged.
- Don’t let the engine run on an empty tank of gas. This could cause major damage to your engine.
- Check and wash the filters regularly.
- Check the spark plug. You will need to replace it with approximately 25-30 hours of use.
- If you have any questions, consult your user’s manual. It will give you the information you need about keeping your commercial weed eater in good working order.
The following facts will teach you more about commercial string trimmers. They may also help you narrow down your choices.
- Where do I use a commercial weed eater?
You use your commercial weed eater every place you would use a regular weed eater. All weed wackers are used to tidy a lawn. Commercial string trimmers are more powerful.
They are ideal on bigger yards. They are larger so you will not need to change the gas as much. Depending on the size of your yard, you may be able to trim the entire thing. That means you only have to fill the gas tank after you are finished. If you need to get the job done quickly and efficiently, you need a commercial weed eater.
- Do I need a commercial weed eater?
Weed eaters are not an essential lawn care item. You can do a decent job with a mower. Weed eaters, in general, do a great job of keeping your yard tidy. They trim grass and weeds where a mower cannot reach.
There are a few specific yards that could use a commercial weed eater. If you have a lot of uneven grass, that is one instance. A lot of pavement or paths also require a good weed eater. In both of these situations, a mower may not be enough to keep the weeds down. You will need a commercial string trimmer to do the job.
- Should I use a specialty weed eater or a multi-purpose one?
You will notice that some of the products reviewed in this article are just commercial string trimmers and some do multiple things. That is by design. Your decision of single or multiple-use is a personal one.
As with most things related to commercial weed eaters, specialty and multi-purpose products come with their pros and cons. Single-use weed eaters are usually stronger. They do not come apart. This means that they have less potential breaking points. There are also fewer places that will need maintenance.
The problem with a single-use weed eater is that they don’t do anything else. You will not be able to use them to trim trees. No accessories will be available to them. If you only want a weed wacker, then that con will be acceptable.
Those who want an all-in-one machine will need to look for a multi-purpose weed eater. Ironically, sometimes these are the budget string trimmers. They will likely be less durable. However, they will come with many more accessories and options for use.
- Gas vs. electric weed eaters
We’ve focused on gas string trimmers in this article. As we’ve already mentioned these products are more powerful. If you are in the market for a commercial string trimmer, you need a gas one. These are the best options for people with a large yard.
Some people may still be better served by a commercial electric weed eater. Those with small yards could use a corded electric string trimmer without a problem. You wouldn’t have to worry about finding another plug for the cord.
Battery-powered weed eaters would be similarly useful in small yards. You wouldn’t have to recharge the battery halfway through trimming. If you don’t have many weeds to trim, then a smaller, commercial battery weed eater would do the trick. You may even prefer the easier to manage the machine.
Sometimes a regular weed eater just isn’t enough. For those yards, you need the best commercial weed eater you can find. As you can tell from this article, the top products come in many shapes and sizes. What they all have in common is gas fuel and a lot of power.
For the most efficient yard trimming around, you need a commercial string trimmer. Go through our buyer’s guide and fact sections. Then choose from one of the ten products we reviewed above. You won’t be sorry.
